It took a while but there’s finally a full World Series Of Poker (WSOP) schedule for the 2021 event. The delayed WSOP tournament will once again take place in person at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
“We could not be more excited to welcome everyone back to Las Vegas and the Rio,” said WSOP Vice President and Tournament Director, Jack Effel. “The entire WSOP team is hard at work to ensure players have the absolute best experience possible.”
The 2021 WSOP will begin Thursday, Sept. 30, and will end before the Thanksgiving holiday on Tuesday, Nov. 23. Online and in-person registration for this year’s WSOP will begin in August.
WSOP mostly returning to normal
In a normal year, the WSOP is a summer event that would already be underway. Unfortunately, the past year has been different due to the coronavirus pandemic. While the poker tournament has been delayed, it will return to a mostly in-person event.
Returning to the traditional format from last year’s hybrid event will allow more players access to the poker tournament. The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is returning to a conventional structure and a recognizable location.
The WSOP will return to a familiar venue. The 200,000 square foot Rio Convention Center will again be the home for a wide variety of tournaments. This year the WSOP will include all popular variations of poker ranging in price from $400 to $250,000.
“Make no mistake, the 2021 WSOP will be the real deal and we’re preparing for a full house. Throughout the storied history of the WSOP, this year will be particularly memorable and we’re preparing for a poker reunion all players can celebrate,” said Ty Stewart, the WSOP’s Executive Director residing over his 16th WSOP.
The Main Event
This is the most recognized and prestigious event at the WSOP. The last $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em World Championship (AKA “Main Event”) in 2019 eclipsed 8,000 entrants for only the second time in history. The largest field was in 2006.
The 2019 Main Event attracted 8,569 players and had a total prize pool was $80,548,600 with $10,000,000 going to the winner. Will poker players return to Las Vegas to pass that number and create an even larger prize pool?
This year, the Main Event will have four starting flights to choose from:
- Day 1A on Thursday, Nov. 4
- Day 1B on Friday, Nov. 5
- Day 1C on Saturday, Nov. 6
- Day 1D on Sunday, Nov. 7
The Main Event Final Table will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 16 and Wednesday, Nov. 17. The WSOP’s new TV partner, CBS, will air a minimum of 15 hours of coverage of the 2021 Main Event.
The deep-stack tournament will continue through the Main Event Final Table on Tuesday, Nov.16 and Wednesday, Nov. 17.
New WSOP Events for 2021
The WSOP could rest on its laurels with players just happy to play a large poker event in person with other humans. However, the WSOP has some new tournaments for players.
Stewart says “We’re beyond thrilled to offer a complete schedule of Can’t-miss events including all our flagships and the variety players deserve.”
Here are highlights of the new and most popular events at the 2021 WSOP:
- Oct. 1: $500 “The Reunion” w/ $5,000,000 Guaranteed prize pool: The WSOP opening weekend event will require more than 10,000 participants.
- Oct. 8 – Nov. 19: Return of the Record Breakers: Each Friday and Saturday of the 2021 WSOP will see one of the tournament’s flagship No-Limit Hold’em events. The Millionaire Maker, Monster Stack, Double Stack, Colossus, and The Closer all return with multi-million dollar prize pools and significant value.
- Oct. 5: $25,000 Heads Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship: This is the WSOP’s annual heads-up championship. This year there’s an increased buy-in to $25,000. There’s a cap of 64 players to create an aura of exclusivity.
- Oct. 10: $1,000 Flip and Go Presented by GG Poker: This popular online format is now a live event. Each player will be all in preflop on the first hand, dealt three cards and selecting two. One player will win the table and immediately move into the money. The tournament will then play out under a traditional structure.
- Nov. 19: Nosebleed PLO: This will be the WSOP’s highest-ever buy-in for a PLO tournament. The $50,000 buy-in event will punctuate a prestigious High Roller series scheduled after the Main Event.
